Excelsior Wastewater Spill
The Metropolitan Council, operator of the regional wastewater collection and treatment system, responded Friday afternoon, May 29, to a wastewater spill in Excelsior, at the intersection of George Street and Beehrle Avenue. Crews stopped the spill and completed cleanup efforts within hours. The spill was caused by other utility construction in the area impacting our infrastructure. Wastewater reached nearby Mud Pond, but did not impact the community garden directly to the north of the pond.
Efforts to repair the damaged infrastructure are underway. Repairs will not interrupt sewer service.
Water quality monitoring crews assessed Mud and Studer ponds over the weekend. Water quality testing results indicate that the spill did not cause elevated bacteria in the ponds and did not impose a public health risk. Signs warning the public “Do Not Enter/ Sewage Spill” will be removed.
